Youth Violence: It’s Not Just An Inner City Issue

By Carole Copeland Thomas On a quiet autumn afternoon last year my phone rang and startled me out of my moment of concentration. Carole, lock all of your doors and dont come outside, the panicked voice of my next door neighbor blurted over the telephone. Completely puzzled, I asked her what on earth she was talking about. Havent you heard the helicopter buzzing above your backyard? They havent caught him yet. Caught who? I asked in bewilderment. The teenage boy up the street who threatened someone with a knife. The police are trying to find him and he may very well be in your wooded backyard! School is still in session and Im concerned where he might go next. Sure enough a helicopter circled my property, looped around and then flew over other homes on their search and seize mission. By now I was completely confused and alarmed that this out-of-control teenager could be hiding right outside my back porch. I called the local police, asked them what was going on, and was given very little information. They merely told me to stay inside my house if I felt unsafe. The police were concerned that this teenager might head to the nearby school, within walking distance of my home. By late afternoon, the excitement had quieted down, the boy had been apprehended, and my neighborhoods drama was one for the record books. Just one thing. The incident never made the newspapers, wasnt featured on our local news broadcast, and was quietly and firmly silenced as my suburban Boston community settled back into its sleepy existence. Another Boston suburban community is also trying to quiet the fears from a recent violent incident. Yet they couldnt hide behind the cloak of secrecy since one of their own had committed the unthinkable crime. Just a few weeks ago a 16 year-old Sudbury, Massachusetts high school sophomore allegedly brought a knife to school and stabbed a 15 year old to death. The killer had been teased at school for wearing a trench coat, just like the killers of Columbine High School. He had trouble fitting in, and suffered from Asperger disease, a mild form of autism. Two suburban incidences. One that ended in mystery. One that ended in murder. Both involved violent young boys with unchecked behavioral patterns in communities far outside of Bostons urban center. The incident in my town never hit the newspaper. The murder in Sudbury flooded the newspapers with expressions of shock, anguish, and bewilderment. My friends, colleagues, and fellow subscribers: Youth violence isnt just an inner city issue. Youth violence is an all-too common occurrence all over our society. Its as much a suburban problem as it is an urban one. Most of the recent school killings involve suburban or rural schools NOT inner city ones. As early as 1997 in Bethel, Alaska, 16 years old Evan Ramsey killed his principal and one student. In 1997 in Paducah, Kentucky 14 year old Michael Carneal killed three students and wounded five others. Who can ever forget the 1999 killing spree of 18 year old Eric Harris and 17 years old Dylan Klebold who slaughtered 12 students and one teacher before killing themselves at Colorados Columbine High School. And last September in Cazenovia, Wisconsin a 15 year old student shot and killed Weston School principal John Klang. Far too often we are too quick to condemn the violent actions of urban youth without examining whats going on in our suburbs and rural communities. They are hurting too, despite how forgiving the media can be when an enraged teenagers takes out their murderous anger on unsuspecting students. I wonder how many more kids will have to die before suburban-rural community leaders and school officials stop burying their heads in the sand and realize that real security measures are needed now to protect the innocent. Its time to install medal detectors and hire security guards in schools like Sudbury High, just like they have in Bostons Jeremiah Burke High. Young people are complicated, inquisitive, and filled with potential. Left unchecked they can blow up in a million pieces, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. The destruction can happen in midst of the inner city, in a pristine suburb or right next to a cornfield. Unchecked behavior is unchecked behavior wherever you live. Its time for American communities to wake up to the reality of exploding youth violence. Its not an urban problem. Its a nationwide dilemma. In addition, a lot of companies allow you to write checks that take from a money market fund. That means you get the advantages of a checking account while earning cash at the end of the month. In order to stand out from the competition, and have your previous clients come back to you, one ought to perform self evaluation after each translation project. Be critical about your skills and ask your clients for feedbacks. Even the negative ones might provide you with another perspectives and ideas on how to improve your skills and develop your professional growth. The Angry and Sometimes Grumpy Children of the 1950’s

By Sue And Chuck DeFiore A bunch of us in our late 40’s and early 50’s got together the other night, and after the evening was over I started thinking that many of us born in the 1950’s are in a crisis stage. People can’t understand why we are so angry and grumpy sometimes. This article discusses some of the issues we have with society today and might enlighten others (the younger set) as to why we seem so disillusioned, and out of sorts at times.
The consensus of the group was “is this all there is.” We’ve been working since our teens. A car costs more today than what our parents bought a house for. We work and work and still don’t have enough. Food costs have risen astronomically, along with utility costs, insurance costs, and housing costs.
We started laughing at one point and said we sound like our grandparents. However, it is a very sad commentary that what took place for our grandparents over numerous decades, has only taken 20 to 30 years to occur for us. The real scary thing is that salaries for many jobs have not changed over that twenty year period, while our expenses have skyrocketed, and increased one hundred fold.
We all became nostalgic when we talked about the things we used to do to relax. How so many of those things are gone, or we can’t afford to do them any longer. Our kids tell us we don’t have a clue about school, sex, music, or what’s going on in the world. Again, the laughter abounded with the music issues, but became very serious when we talked about the scary things kids do today, that we wouldn’t even have thought of when we were growing up. Killing teachers, and other students never entered our minds. We had respect for our teachers and those in charge.
The next thing we ranted about was our health. For some of us, the ravages of time have taken place… eyesight problems, arthritis problems, blood pressure problems, “the barnacles of life”. The discussion we had on the cost of health care was a lively and volatile one to say the least. Many of us who have had major illness problems also went ballistic with regards to the social security system, the disability system and Medicare system. The majority of us have worked since our teenage years. We were incredulous when it took over a year to get money from the social security system, especially when we see people playing the system who don’t deserve it.
All of us are still working. The majority of our group are either self-employed or independent contractors. Many of us run home-based businesses. While we are still disheartened with the rise in costs, at least our work environment is a happy one, and one we feel in control of. For those in our group still working in corporate America, that’s just an additional concern and stress for them. Is their job safe? Will they be downsized? Laid off? We went back and forth on the work issue and found that while running your own business is a risk, we have a lot more control over our destiny than if we worked for someone else, and hence, a lot less stress. Plus we can’t fire ourselves.
We all wondered where it will end. So many of us thought we would be retired by now, or at least contemplating it within the next ten to fifteen years. However, with all the medical advances and hundred-fold costs of so many things, that is not an option. Retirement is no longer something people do automatically between 55 and 65. Today, the retirement age is in the 70’s.
For many of us, the thought of another twenty or more years of working is a depressing one, in addition to making us very angry and grumpy to say the least.
Hopefully this article will provide some insight to those who wonder why the over 40 generation is so angry and grumpy at times.

How much information is too much and how much is too little when dealing with resume copy? The resume is a vital piece to any job search. As companies scramble to find the ideal candidate, they use the resume to screen candidates. Done right, a resume builds an instant connection with the reader and helps steer the course of the interview in your favor. If you submit a resume that piques the curiosity of the reader, he or she most likely will ask questions based on the information you provided on the resume as opposed to relying on a pre-packaged questionnaire. Thats how you know you have an interviewable resume, when it assists in shaping the course of the interview. The challenge is, How does one create an interviewable resume, one that isnt boring or sterile? How does one write a resume that motivates the reader to give you a call? By Carl Mueller The Human Resources interview is often the first step in the job interview process. Its also one of the steps that job searchers tend to look at as being unimportant. Job searchers who treat the HR interview as being unimportant risk losing out on jobs. Ive lost count of how many times Ive been helping a job candidate prepare for a job interview and have had to convince them that the Human Resources interview that they are preparing for is one that they actually need to take seriously. Many people seem to think that they are smarter than the HR person they are going to interview with and think that they can confuse them with technical jargon and bluff their way past HR to get to the hiring manager. If you are not making it past the HR interview stage for various jobs you are applying for, you need to understand the differences between interviewing with an HR interviewer and the hiring manager. HR is brought into the interview process to represent the company and to determine whether or not you are a fit for the organization. Here are some things you should consider when preparing for a Human Resources interview.

1. Human Resources can prevent you from getting hired. Ive seen cases where the HR representative prevents the hiring manager from hiring someone who the hiring manager wanted. HR can have significant input into the hiring process in some companies and in some cases can be the final say as to whether or not you get hired regardless of whether you interview with them first or last and regardless of how badly the hiring manager wants you. 2. The Human Resources interview will assess your suitability to join the company. Before a company invests potentially tens of thousands of dollars (or more) by hiring you, they are going to ensure you will fit within the organization. If you cant answer questions about yourself, why you want to join the company and other HR-type questions why would they hire you? The questions may seem trivial to you but they arent to the HR person interviewing you, trust me. 3. Understand how Human Resources can help you get the job. Ive seen some HR reps who tell me on the phone that they particularly like one candidate over another and basically tell me that they are going to try to steer the hiring manager towards that candidate and away from the one they dont like as much. They arent necessarily playing favorites, theyve simply decided that one candidate suits the company better than another. HR can be your advocate if you take them seriously. 4. People hire people who they like. All things being equal, a company will someone they like over someone who they dont like as much. When two candidates are equal in all areas, a company will hire the person that they feel will be a better fit in their organization. Its really that simple. Performing well during the Human Resources interview can only help your chances at getting the job. 5. Dont assume the HR rep doesnt know what you know. Unless you know the Human Resources person interviewing you or unless youve seen a copy of their resume, how you can tell what they know and what they dont know? Dont assume that they wont understand your business or profession or that youll confuse them by using technical jargon. For all you know, they may have done your job in the past and be very familiar with your job. They may interview people with your skills regularly so believing that you can confuse them by mentioning technical terms and phrases might end up costing you when they see right through it.
